Manager Hadoop Operations (eBay)

Job Location: San Jose, CA

Primary Job Responsibilities

This is a manager role with an expert level knowledge of the Hadoop eco-system with an innovative mind set. The candidate will serve as the leader responsible for maintaining and improving service availability, quality, and mentoring and growing the team of senior Hadoop engineers. The role will also provide support in the areas of design, implementation, configuration, change and problem management, deployment services, version control, system monitoring, automation and technical support across all ad hoc and production Hadoop platforms within marketplace. The role is expected to provide hands-on support as needed to deliver on the aggressive business goals. The position is located in San Jose, CA offices.

• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of senior Hadoop engineers within operations organization
• Manage the restoration and repairs of all major incidents within Hadoop and Hadoop eco-system continuously improving MTTR
• Work with internal and external technical leaders to develop innovative solutions that meet market needs with respect to functionality, performance, scalability, and reliability, realistic implementation schedules, and adherence to architectural goals and principles
• Review, develop, and implement strategies that preserve the integrity, availability, stability, and scalability of analytics systems and designs
• Work with Architecture and Development teams to test and benchmark new versions, patches and software components for functionality and reliability
• Contribute to the selection, prototyping, implementation and support of tools such as capacity planning and system monitoring for large scale data environments
• Provide system hardware architecture and configuration recommendations, perform vendor evaluation
• Review existing software/hardware architecture and identify areas for improvement in the areas of scalability, maintainability, and performance
• Ongoing corrective and preventative maintenance to improve reliability and availability
• Preparation of proposals, reports, architectures, designs, specifications, and operational documentation
• Fosters relationships of trust, respect, judgments, and maturity with peers, customers, management

Job Requirements
Master level experience with large scale Hadoop environments build and support including thought leadership, design, configuration, installation, capacity planning, capacity management, and performance tuning and monitoring.
• Solid understanding of how businesses operate and use this context to drive innovation and ethical decision-making
• A natural leader who can inspire and bring out the best from direct reports, peers.
• The leader who has a passion for customers, and drives the execution of projects with laser sharp focus and agility
• The leader who can communicate and articulate the complex technological problems and the innovative solutions to the senior management
• Expert level knowledge (architecture, engineering, hands-on support) with the overall Hadoop eco-system (HDFS, Map Reduce, Pig/Hive, Zookeeper, Hbase, Oozie, etc.)
• Expertise in UNIX architecture, systems administration and UNIX tools
• Extensive experience in designing and implementing large scale analytics environments with particular attention to maintainability, scalability and high availability
• Experience with versioning, change control, problem management
• Solid experience with monitoring frameworks, and analyzing production platforms, UNIX servers and mission critical systems with alerting and self-healing systems
• Expert level capacity planning and capacity management skills
• Proven results oriented engineer with a laser sharp delivery focus
• Sought out as an expert in all aspects of technical field with a solid business context
• BS in Computer Science or equivalent
• Master level problem solving, root cause analysis, and comprehensive and strategic resolution to complex engineering problems

Education
BSCS or BSEE or Other Related 4yr Technical Degree
